Overview
The Asian Languages and Cultures (ALC) at the National Institute of Education in Singapore comprises the Chinese, Malay, and Tamil Divisions. ALC's vision is to work towards the mission of NIE and establish ALC as a Centre of Excellence for Chinese, Malay and Tamil Languages, Literature, Culture and Education. We aim to nurture excellent teacher-researchers devoted to the development and promotion of mother tongue language education, Asian values and cultures as pillars of Singapore's national identity and harmony. Student teachers who enrol in our programmes can expect to receive a firm academic foundation in content knowledge of their area studies as well as current knowledge in curriculum and pedagogy. ALC's research places emphasis on high-impact interdisciplinary content, pedagogical innovation, challenging existing theories and extending the prevalent boundary of Asian studies.
ALC invites suitably qualified applicants to apply for a faculty position in its Chinese language and culture division. The Chinese division of ALC provides training for Chinese language teachers through both pre-service and professional development programmes in Singapore.
Requirements

  • Applicants must hold a doctoral degree in Applied Linguistics, with a strong interest in second language acquisition, curriculum development, and the pedagogy of teaching listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills both as a mother tongue and as a second language to children and adolescents
  • Extensive experience and expertise in research in the above fields
  • Native or near-native competence in oral and written Chinese and English
  • Demonstrate strong ability for effective undergraduate and graduate level teaching
  • Sufficient knowledge of the Singapore curriculum and the Singapore education system
  • Sufficient knowledge of the Global Chinese curriculum and the education system for international schools (preferred).


Responsibilities

  • Lead or collaborate on funded research projects and maintain a strong research and publication record
  • Teach undergraduate and postgraduate level courses in curriculum development and pedagogy in the Chinese language
  • Supervise and mentor undergraduate student teachers in their school teaching practice
  • Supervise Masters and PhD dissertation work
  • Undertake any administrative duties required as exigencies of the service


(For Associate Professor level) Mentoring of young faculty members and serve in the NIE / NTU committees, and offer professional services to schools, the Ministry of Education and other public education-related organizations on a request basis.
