Lecturer in Ethics and Civics
The School of Social Sciences invites applications for a Lecturer position in the Interdisciplinary Collaborative Core for a course titled 'Ethics and Civics in a Multicultural World' at Nanyang Technological University.
Ethics and Civics in a Multicultural World aims to equip students with the necessary philosophical foundations to understand theories of ethics and subsequently apply those theories to real-life scenarios and issues. It also aims to enable students to understand and critically assess the civic institutions that structure their local and global communities.
Topics include human rights, democracy, freedom of speech, inequality, abortion, as well as many others. The rights and duties of citizenship shall be a unifying theme. Students will think through assumptions they hold on all of these matters. They will be provided with the tools to understand conflicting perspectives on these important issues. There will be a substantial amount of time devoted toward understanding Singapore's own institutions and ideologies, which are of course products specific to the country's own unique historical and geo-political circumstances.
Responsibilities
The syllabus, including content and assignments, for Ethics and Civics in a Multicultural World is fixed. The hired Lecturer will have the following responsibilities:

  • Facilitate and conduct all teaching assignments during tutorials, both face-to-face and virtual delivery, across multiple tutorial groups involving activities such as case discussions and student panel presentations.
  • Help improve the curriculum, course outlines, evaluation procedures and instruments to foster student learning, stimulate class discussions, and ensure student engagement.
  • Support course administration such as course evaluation, online course materials, data entry related to seminar groups, attendance records, and academic counselling on student progress
  • Conduct assessments, marking and grade entries, feedback to students, student consultations, non-academic matters etc.
  • Provide regular course and student progress statistics
  • Adhere to principles of professional conduct.
  • Any other assigned duties


Requirements
Candidates with the following qualifications are encouraged to apply:

  • A master's degree (e.G., MA) or a PhD in philosophy, politics/political science, or public policy. Holding a PhD degree is an advantage.
  • Ability to teach ethics, public policy, government, or civics.
  • A record of excellence in teaching and mentoring is an advantage.
  • Interest and/or proficiency in technology-enhanced learning (e.G., developing online learning activities and assessments, creating lectures to be streamed online).
  • Demonstrated potential for scholarship is an advantage.
