Job Description


The National University of Singapore invites applications for Research Associate for “Built Environment, Ageism, and Mental Well-Being” in the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. Appointments will be made on a 1-year contract basis, with the possibility of extension.


Purpose of the post


This interdisciplinary project adopts a systems approach to investigating the interplay of ageism, built environment, and well-being across cultures. The Research Associate (RA) will be responsible for and work closely with the Principal Investigator, Associate Professor Emi Kiyota (Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine and College of Design and Engineering), collaborator Associate Professor Jia Lile (Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences), and study team members to ensure the successful completion of the project. The RA’s principal role will be to lead the project’s thrust in architecture and urban planning.


Main Duties and Responsibilities


The Research Associate will lead research in understanding the architectural structures and environments of elderly care institutions. The RA will be able to:


  1. Acquire the Geographic Information System and floor plans of the targeted institutions;

  2. Conduct clustering analyses, space syntax research, and spatial pattern analyses on targeted institutions;

  3. When necessary, conduct interviews with residents of elderly care centers to understand the impact of the built environment on their well-being.
  4. Oversee the general management of the project;

  5. Provide administrative and secretarial support to the project, such as organizing regular meetings to maintain regular communication with other members of the research team and collaborate with the study sites;

  6. Conduct literature searches, maintain database, as well as assist in preparing both progress and final reports of the project;

  7. Maintainthe highest standard of professional conduct and record keeping in accordance with policies and procedures;

  8. Assist with any other duties of a similar nature that are delegated by the PI.


Qualifications


The applicant should:


  1. Have a first degree with good results, hold a Master’s degree, or are in an advanced stage of their PhD degree (e.G., qualified for PhD candidature) in urban planning, architecture, or related disciplines;

  2. be able to work independently and in a team, have an investigative nature, and pay attention to detail;

  3. have knowledge of computer applications relevant to the project, e.G., GIS mapping, MS Office, PowerPoint;

  4. have research experience in urban planning, architecture, or built environment, especially in analyses such as clustering analyses, space syntax research, and spatial pattern analyses.
