Research Fellow (Physics-Based Earthquake Rupture Modelling)

Ntu (nanyang technology university- main office-hr) - Singapore
new offer (30/06/2024)

job description

The Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS) is seeking a Research Fellow to contribute to our project on physics-based earthquake rupture modelling. The selected candidate will join the Computational Geophysics Lab at EOS under the supervision of Asst Prof. Luca Dal Zilio and will be part of the "
Integrating Volcano and Earthquake Science and Technology (InVEST) in Southeast Asia"
project. This 5-year project aims to improve our understanding of earthquakes and their cascading hazards and impacts in Southeast Asia. This position focuses on the modelling complex nature of fault ruptures, which involve multiple fault sections and solid-fluid interactions, phenomena highlighted by recent seismic events.
The appointed candidate will develop and apply 3D dynamic earthquake rupture scenarios that incorporate nonlinear frictional failure and seismic wave propagation across complex fault systems. Utilizing supercomputing resources, this work will create models predicting ground motions and surface fault displacements. The role requires close collaboration with an international team of geologists, seismologists, geodesists, and hazard modelers to integrate these models into comprehensive seismic hazard assessments.
Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct Physics-Based Numerical Simulations:
Develop and utilize advanced numerical simulations to compute viable rupture scenarios.
  • Model Development and Data Integration:
Develop numerical models informed by previously acquired geological, geophysical, and geodetic datasets, ensuring a robust and accurate representation of seismic activities.
  • Data Management and Analysis:
Manage, analyse, and interpret complex datasets, employing the latest methodologies and tools for accurate and efficient data processing.
  • Interdisciplinary Collaboration:
Engage in close collaboration with experts across diverse disciplines, integrating various datasets to enhance the understanding of regional seismic dynamics.
  • Scenario Analysis and Hazard Identification:
Identify potentially impactful hazard scenarios specific to the Southeast Asian region, focusing on high-risk areas and key geological features.
  • Dissemination of Research Findings:
Present, publish, and communicate research results in scientific meetings, scholarly journals, and other relevant platforms, contributing to the broader scientific discourse.

Job Requirements:

  • Ph.D. in Earth Science, Geology, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Geophysics, Seismology or related field
  • Strong interest in computational modelling
  • Post-doctoral experience an advantage
  • Expertise and interests in numerical modelling, earthquake source physics, and fracture mechanics
  • Experience in computational seismology and numerical methods
  • Strong expertise in programming with MATLAB/Python/Julia/C/C++
  • Track record of publishing research relevant to the position in international recognised journals
  • Evidence of excellent communication skills
  • Evidence of independence in research direction and team spirit
  • Methodical research approach and effective teamwork skills in a multidisciplinary setting
